Acupuncture for Anxiety and Depression

At Pulse Acupuncture Brisbane, we specialise in acupuncture for anxiety, depression and stress. We listen deeply, enquire gently, and provide unique support and guidance to see our clients be in their best psyche.

The system of TCM has a unique understanding of mental health conditions. We understand that each of our organs contribute different components to our mood, outlook, thoughts, and being. We never separate the emotional from the physical, we are but one body, and one symptom speaks for another.

The efficacy of Acupuncture for the treatment of anxiety and depression relies upon identifying the underlying TCM pattern the client is experiencing. In doing so, we prescribe the best acupuncture treatment, Chinese herbs, nutritional supplements, dietary and lifestyle advice to achieve the best outcome for the patient we treat.

A 2016 systematic review of literature and studies into the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of anxiety concluded acupuncture showed positive and statistically significant effects
(Goyata SL, Avelino CC, Santos SV, Souza Junior DI, Gurgel MD, Terra FS. Effects from acupuncture in treating anxiety: integrative review. Rev Bras Enferm. 2016 Jun;69(3):602-9)

Research shows promising results with acupuncture for the treatment of depression. A 2015 systematic review concluded acupuncture plus SSRIs showed superior outcomes to SSRIs alone (Chan YY, Lo WY, Yang SN, Chen YH, Lin JG. The benefit of combined acupuncture and antidepressant medication for depression: A systematic review and meta-analysis. J Affect Disord. 2015 May 1;176:106-17.). Another 2018 systematic review deems acupuncture “Effective and safe for major depressive disorder, especially in improving sleep, mood and Quality of Life by modulating and normalizing the limbic–paralimbic–neocortical network (LPNN), including the default mode network (DMN)” (Bosch P, van den Noort M, Staudte H, Lim S. Schizophrenia and Depression: A systematic Review of the Effectiveness and the Working Mechanisms Behind Acupuncture. Explore (NY). 2015 Jul-Aug;11(4):281-91.)
